Solar tracker planning permission: a project preparation checklist

Prepare the information needed to discuss solar tracker planning, structural design and grid connection with the authorities for your installation site.

Planning rules depend on the country, local authority and characteristics of the site. This English-language checklist helps organise a project enquiry; it does not assign one country’s approval thresholds to another.

Define the project before checking permissions

Prepare the location, parcel boundaries, intended use, proposed capacity and tracker dimensions. Include the height and movement envelope in relevant positions, the foundations and distances to boundaries or buildings.

Identify access routes, existing services and nearby sensitive uses. A product name or a general photograph is not enough to determine the applicable procedure.

Ask the responsible planning authority

Establish which authority handles the site and describe the actual proposal. Ask which drawings, assessments and permissions are required. The answer may depend on protected land, agricultural use, visual impact or other local constraints.

Do not assume that a small installation is exempt, or that a French case study proves eligibility elsewhere. Retain the written requirements and decision documents.

Treat grid connection as a separate workstream

Contact the relevant electricity network operator early. Provide the proposed generation capacity, connection arrangement and information requested for the installation. Planning permission does not itself confirm grid connection capacity.

An installer should coordinate protection, electrical design and commissioning requirements with the operator. Avoid ordering around an unverified connection assumption.

Check agricultural and structural questions

Where farming continues beneath or between the modules, document that activity and its required clearances. Check the local treatment of agrivoltaics separately from the suitability of the tracker product.

Structural design must cover site conditions, foundations and relevant loads. Use approved project documentation rather than transferring foundation dimensions from another site.

Keep the decision trail together

Store plans, correspondence, permissions, connection documents and the final equipment configuration together. Identify any conditions that must be met before works or operation.

The land-use guide and complete project guide help structure the technical information for these discussions.
