Solar tracker land use: foundations, clearance and soil impact
Distinguish module area, project footprint and sealed ground when assessing solar tracker foundations, access routes and retained land uses.

The land beneath a PV installation is not necessarily all sealed. Equally, a tracker is not an impact-free structure. A useful site assessment distinguishes permanent foundations, movement clearance and the way the land will actually be used.
Three different measures of area
Module area measures the surface of the PV modules. Project area also includes spacing, movement envelopes and operating access. Sealed ground concerns areas such as foundations or paved routes that alter the soil surface.
These measurements are not interchangeable. A small foundation footprint does not mean the rest of the site remains available without restrictions.
Design foundations for the location
Foundation type and size depend on the tracker, soil, structural loads and the approved layout. A concrete volume quoted for one configuration should not be applied to every installation.
Consider construction access, temporary storage, cable trenches and eventual removal. Soil compaction during construction can matter even where permanent sealing is limited.
Retain useful access and activities
Allow space for inspection, cleaning, vegetation management and emergency access. Assess clearance in the relevant operating and safety positions, rather than from one photograph or a parked position.
On a farm, machinery widths, turning areas, animal movement and electrical protection must be planned together. Agrivoltaic use needs a genuine agricultural concept.
A site plan provides the answer
Mark foundations, cable routes, swept areas, access and retained uses on the same drawing. Add soil information and shading constraints. This gives a clearer basis for comparison than a general claim about minimal land use.
Compare the product families and fixed PV alternatives against the same site objectives.
